Woopie for Whoopie Pies!!

Have you ever heard of a biscuit that is half cake, half cookie, and has a filling in between? Hint: It looks like a hamburger.

That’s right, WHOOPIE PIES!! It is a fun little treat that is so fun to make, eat and also a feast for the eyes.

Andrea came over to my house today, and we decided to make this fun dessert. The flavour of the day would be Red Velvet.

We found a recipe online. Click here for the link. Many of the ones we found added TONS of sugar, and if we did that, it’d be diabetes in a bowl. Haha. My parents said it was really sweet, and doughy. I think we would have to make sure the consistency of the batter is more even next round.

We modified it a bit so that it would be less sweet, and we did not use a Piping Bag. We made our own Buttermilk, by adding 1/2 a cup of Milk, a tablespoon of lemon juice and letting it sit for 10-15 minutes. Buttermilk is usually used for cakes and desserts due to its way of bringing out the buttery flavour. It is usually sold in huge cartons like milk in the US, but if you’re making it for a one-off thing, handmade ones will do. Also, adding vinegar is another option! For the cocoa powder, we used Hershey’s unsweetened cocoa powder. Also, we used a tablespoon of Red food colouring in total, such that it gave a pinkish red colour. We cut down the icing sugar from 2 cups to 1 cup. It was already sweet enough!!

Making Whoopie Pies the Vintage way:

When the batter is ready, use 2 spoons to shape the batter into a ball, and then put it on the baking sheet.

Instead of a piping bag, we decided to use a teaspoon to put the cream filling onto the biscuit. Simply plop it onto one biscuit, and then squeeze it together. Voila! A nice looking Whoopie Pie!! It looks homemade.

Since we followed the recipe, I won’t post a recipe about it… But then, let me give you a history of Whoopie pies.

Woopie pies are actually cookies with a creamy filling. A glass of milk is almost mandatory when eating a whoopie pie. They are of Pennsylvania Amish origin, and they used to be called ‘Gobs’. It is commonly eaten in Maine. A story says that the name originated from a lady who was making a cake with leftover batter during the times of the Great Depression. She then filled the batter with it, and said, ‘WOOPIE, IT WORKED!!’ And so, came the name ‘Whoopie Pie.’ There are many flavours to it, and red velvet is just one of them.

Have fun making Whoopie Pies y’all!! Haha. I sure had a lot of fun with one of my good friends, and I was so happy she could come to my house to chill! It feels good to have a buddy around by your side. We mopped the floor together, washed up and she even brought me a whole cup of Soya Bean from Mr Bean. It reminded me of the time during MOE where we would buy that cup of Soya Bean before work started, or during our long breaks. 🙂

This is the first time she has been to my house, so I am sure looking forward to the time where we can swim together or something. Our Adventure Cove tales (with Sharifa)  shall wait then, and the weather today did not permit such an outing anyway.

After that I went for my health check up in the rain. I made a newish acquaintance whom I bumped into at the bus stop. She had no umbrella, so after I ushered her across we stayed together for pretty much the whole checkup. It went okay, and I am healthy to go!!! The doc said my heart beat’s really good, so I am in a good range. Hooray for a good day Till the next baking adventure. Next time, it would be pandan items, macaroon, maybe even cinnamon rolls!
